2018 LDV T60 Review

2018 ldv t60

The LDV T60 Ute launches into Australia’s fastest growing segment, light commercial vehicles.

More than that LDV and its parent company China’s largest vehicle maker SAIC (which also owns and manufactures MG’s in China, is 46th on the fortune 500 list and set for 7 million car sales in 2017) see this new model as entree into the world market for the new LDV, ready to tackle global standards in design, technology and ability.

If you look at a picture of the winner of the 2017 Sydney to Hobart yacht race, Comanche, you will see an LDV Ute on its sail.

LDV, purchased by SAIC in 2009, was formed from two leading European truck businesses, Leyland and DAF, and has had much success with commercial van sales.

So the T60 Ute arrives in Australia in two forms, as family runabout and off roader (LUXE variant), and also as a more rugged tradie’s vehicle (PRO variant), with some differences in equipment levels and setups in each guise.

It has rugged roof carry rails and a tough Polythene tub liner, and solid side running boards for easier entry/exit.

It is a dual cab, four doors, five seat all-wheel drive, with high and low drive ranges, Hill Descent Control and Rear on-demand Differential Lock on the Luxe.

Just one motor is being offered, 2.8 litre intercooled direct-inject variable-geometry turbo diesel, with 6 speed manual or auto transmission.

Differences between variants are that the suspension is more solid for the PRO, and the interior finish has more hard plastic and is more suited to rough treatment, also there is a rear headboard window guard for cargo, whereas the LUXE has softer more comfortable suspension setup, better interior finishes, lightweight polished chrome sport roll bar in back, and more extras.

There is a large 10-inch touchscreen entertainment/info system, with Apple and Android connection, plus Bluetooth, and mp3 connection, 6 speaker AM/FM radio system with two USB ports and two 12V power sockets.

Aircon is two zone climate control in the Luxe, along with heated leather trim front seats, leather covered steering wheel and keyless entry and start.

The T60’s Safety and driving aids include: Auto Dusk Sensing Adaptive LED Front Headlights and LED day time running lights, Rain Sensing Windscreen Wipers, tyre pressure monitoring, advanced Rear-View Cam, 6 Airbags and Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Blind Spot Monitor, Electronic Brake Assist (EBA) and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Hill Assist System to stop rolling with foot off brake, and Driver Fatigue Monitor to warn when rest is needed.

Unladen Approach / Departure Angles are 27° / 24.2°, ground clearance is 215 m, and wading depth is 550 mm.

There is a range of  accessories available including Alloy nudge bar, Headlamp and Bonnet protectors, Wind deflectors, Roof Bars Vortex and Stealth, Tow Bar, Floor mats Front, Rear and cargo, Sliding floor cargo tray, Tuff Lid with sports bar, Canopy, Alloy tray and Ladder rack for tray.

Basic driveaway price is $28,990 for the PRO manual, then auto transmission is +$2k and the LUXE version is another +$4k.

A big improvement over other previous Chinese vehicles is the 5 star ANCAP safety rating the T60 achieves, with its six airbags, pre-tensing seat-belts, driver aids and safety gear, and crash test ability.
